Blue-Green Algae Is Fatal to Dogs. Here's What to Check Before Your Next Walk.
A dog in Florida died within hours of swimming in a lake last summer. The cause was cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae, and the owner had no idea the water was dangerous. It looked fine.
Florida International University put out a fresh warning on September 17, and with late summer still running hot across much of the US and UK, this is exactly the moment owners stop paying attention to seasonal risks. Don't.
What blue-green algae actually is
Cyanobacteria isn't a plant, despite the name. It's a bacterium that photosynthesises, and under the right conditions, mostly warm, slow-moving freshwater with high nutrient levels, it blooms into thick mats or scum on the surface. Some strains produce toxins. Two in particular cause the most harm in dogs: microcystins, which attack the liver, and anatoxins, which hit the nervous system.
The really grim part is the dose required to cause serious harm. We're not talking about a dog swimming through a patch and ingesting a litre of it. Licking contaminated water off their fur after a swim can be enough. A few mouthfuls from the shallows. The margin is extremely thin.
Why late summer is the danger window
Algae blooms peak when water temperatures are highest and there's been enough time for nutrients (mostly phosphorus and nitrogen from agricultural runoff) to accumulate. In most of the continental US and southern UK, that's July through September. Some years it stretches into October.
The problem is that the same conditions that create a dangerous bloom, warm weather, calm water, sunshine, are exactly the conditions that make a lake or pond look inviting to a dog. They're not going to hesitate at the water's edge doing a risk assessment.
What a toxic bloom looks like, and what it doesn't
This is where it gets frustrating, because there's no reliable visual cue. Blooms can look like:
- Thick green or blue-green scum on the surface
- A greenish sheen across the water
- Foam collecting at the edges
- Murky water with a pea-soup colour
But some toxic blooms produce very little visible surface change. And some visually alarming algae is harmless. You genuinely cannot tell by looking, which is why the safest position is to keep dogs out of any standing freshwater you're not certain about. Moving water, rivers with decent flow, is generally lower risk, though not zero.
Signs posted by local authorities are helpful but lag behind reality. A bloom can form in 24 to 48 hours under the right conditions. A lake that was tested and cleared on Monday can be dangerous by Wednesday.
Symptoms to watch for
If your dog has been in or near suspect water, watch closely for the next 15 to 60 minutes. Neurological symptoms from anatoxin exposure can appear very fast. With liver toxins like microcystins, the timeline is longer but the damage accumulates.
Symptoms include:
- Excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Seizures or muscle tremors
- Weakness, staggering, or collapse
- Pale or yellow-tinged gums
- Difficulty breathing
If you see any of these after freshwater exposure, don't wait for symptoms to worsen. Call your vet or an emergency clinic immediately, and tell them specifically about potential algae exposure so they can prioritise liver and neurological assessment.
There's no antidote. Treatment is supportive, which means the faster you get there, the better the outcome.
What to actually do before, during, and after
Before you go anywhere near open water with your dog, check whether your local authority or environmental agency maintains a water quality alert page. In the US, the EPA's Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) provides satellite-based bloom monitoring, and several states run their own alert systems. The UK's Environment Agency publishes bloom alerts by region.
At the water's edge, if the surface looks off or smells musty or like rotting vegetation, leave. That smell is one of the more reliable warning signs, though an absence of it doesn't mean you're safe.
If your dog does get in the water, rinse them off thoroughly before they can lick their fur. Use clean water, not more of the lake. Keep them on lead until you've done that.

The part about freshwater that most owners underestimate
There's a tendency to think of blue-green algae as a rare or exotic risk, something that happens to other people's dogs in news stories. The FIU warning issued this week is a reminder that it's a recurring seasonal threat, not an anomaly.
UK owners shouldn't read "Florida International University" and mentally file this under "American problem" either. The Environment Agency recorded over 100 confirmed bloom sites in England alone in the summer of 2023. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have had fatalities in dogs linked to cyanobacteria in previous years.
The honest answer is that most dog owners don't know which local lakes are monitored and which aren't. Many aren't monitored at all. So the practical default has to be treating unfamiliar standing water as potentially unsafe, especially from July onwards, and building that assumption into every walk near water.
It's a frustrating constraint if your dog loves to swim. But it's a lot less frustrating than the alternative.
